πͺMILLERβS LAW & THE MAGIC OF 7+/-2!
Today we will talk about an effect that is widely used and widely misunderstood too.
This is one of the oldest tricks in the book, where people have in most situations misunderstood the concept. This common misconception states that the use of this law means limiting the options, as the consumer would get confused, and the mental fatigue would lead to no action at all.
Hereβs what the actual law states:
The average person can only hold about 7 (plus or minus 2) items in their working memory at a time. Further studies into the law found that itβs not just about the number, but the concept of chunking.
What is Chunking?
It is the practice of splitting/ organizing a big piece of information into smaller chunks. This makes it easy for people to understand and take action.
It was found that the size of the chunks doesn't matter; you can remember seven words as easily as seven letters. Factors like context, familiarity, and capacity influence how much we can retain. Bottom line: human short-term memory is limited, but chunking helps us retain information effectively.
Now how can you use the effect for your brand?
Search Results: When presenting search results, chunk related products or categories together. This helps users quickly identify the type of products that most interest them and navigate the results more efficiently. Ensure this is added with not more than 9 results at a time and a minimum of 5 results to their search unless itβs a specific search, in which case you can use this principle to recommendations related to the searched product.
Filters and Sorting Options: Group related filters and sorting options together. This can help users quickly find and apply the filters they need, making it easier for them to find the products they're looking forβ.
Customer Support Options: Group your customer support options together in a distinct section of the website. This makes it easier for customers to find help when they need it, whether it's FAQs, live chat, email support, or phone support.
Shopping Cart: Break down the shopping cart into chunks: item details, price, quantity, and options to remove or save for later. This makes it easier for customers to review their cart and proceed to checkout.
These are just a few applications, you can get as creative with this one principle as you want and see some wonderful effects, hereβs an example below:
As you can see House Of AAMA breaks information down into chunks that make it easier for users to make their decision.
Thatβs one effect! See you next Wednesday, with another fun and intriguing effect!
