đŻ The catalog-matching feature built for streaming is a preview for everyone else
TikTokâs newest ad product, Streaming Ads, was built for a narrow audience: subscription streaming services matching high-intent audiences to specific titles from a content library, powered by Smart+ automation.
Most advertisers reading about it will correctly conclude it doesnât apply to them directly. Whatâs worth paying attention to instead is the underlying mechanic, since itâs a preview of where Smart+ catalog matching is headed for every advertiser running a large product catalog, not just a streaming library.
The core idea: instead of running one ad or one ad set per SKU, feed the whole catalog to Smart+ and let it match individual items to individual viewers based on intent signals, the same logic streaming platforms now use to match a specific show to a specific subscriber. A large catalog stops being a production burden and becomes an automation input.
Audit whether your current catalog setup is ready for this kind of matching
Automated catalog matching is only as good as the data feeding it. A product feed with thin titles, missing attributes, or inconsistent categorization gives the matching engine very little to work with, regardless of how sophisticated the underlying model is.
Pull a sample of your catalog and check for the same completeness a streaming serviceâs title library would need: clear category tags, distinct enough descriptions that items in the same category are actually differentiable, and current pricing and availability.
Gaps here are the first thing worth fixing before catalog-driven ad formats matter for your account specifically.
Watch for this expanding beyond streaming before assuming it wonât apply to you
Ad products built for one vertical first frequently expand to adjacent categories once the underlying mechanic proves out, and catalog-to-audience matching is a mechanic that generalizes well past subscription content.
Track TikTokâs ad product announcements for language that widens Smart+ catalog matching beyond its current scope, rather than waiting for an explicit announcement addressed to your category.
Being catalog-ready before the expansion happens means testing on day one instead of scrambling to fix feed quality after a launch. Setting up an account through TikTok for Business is the practical first step.
Compare the logic against what youâre already doing in dynamic product ads elsewhere
If youâre running dynamic product ads on other platforms, the underlying matching logic here isnât unfamiliar, just newly available on TikTok specifically. Treat catalog feed quality as shared infrastructure across every platform running this kind of matching, rather than optimizing it separately for each one.
A feature built for streaming subscriptions today is a preview of catalog automation for everyone else tomorrow, and the advertisers with clean feeds now are the ones ready when it arrives.
đ Microsoft and Google are taking more control over ad optimization
Microsoft and Google are pushing advertisers further toward automated bidding, campaign upgrades and AI-generated reporting. At the same time, shifting Shopping performance and new incrementality tools are making independent measurement increasingly important.
The Breakdown:
Shopping CTR is rising while reach shrinks - CTR is up 17% to 20% year over year, but clicks remain flat as impressions decline, suggesting ads are appearing against fewer, higher-intent searches.
Microsoft is removing Max CPC controls - From October 1, new campaigns using Maximize Conversions, Conversion Value, Clicks, tCPA or tROAS cannot set Max CPC limits. Existing caps remain unless removed.
Google is automatically upgrading Search campaigns - Campaigns using campaign-level broad match or automatically created assets will move to AI Max automatically. Advertisers must disable those features if they want to avoid the upgrade.
Gemini can now build performance dashboards - Googleâs AI Dashboards turn natural-language prompts into charts and live performance summaries, giving advertisers a faster way to explore reporting and identify changes.
Meridian GeoX adds independent incrementality testing - The free open-source library runs geo experiments across platforms and can calibrate marketing mix models, giving advertisers another way to measure whether campaigns actually caused additional results.
Ad platforms are steadily automating more bidding, targeting and analysis, leaving advertisers with fewer direct controls. That makes independent experimentation and measurement more valuable, especially when improving platform metrics like CTR can hide declines elsewhere in the funnel.

What Works:
Perspective Stops Scroll - The oversized bottle in the foreground creates a strong forced-perspective pattern interrupt, immediately anchoring attention on the product while preserving the athlete and sport context.
Use Case Feels Clear - The tennis setting makes hydration timing obvious, helping viewers connect the bottle to active performance while strengthening message-market fit for fitness-oriented consumers.
Copy Reinforces Benefit - âPlay Hard. Hydrate Smart.â pairs ambition with utility, while the supporting hydration line makes the product benefit easy to process without increasing cognitive load.
Use forced perspective to make the hero product physically dominate the frame while keeping the consumer in action behind it. That boosts thumb-stop power and product recall.
